How to use a TOEFL mock test well
Most people sit a mock, look at the number and move on. The number is the least useful part. This page is about getting the rest.
When to sit one
Sit your first mock early, before you feel ready. Its job is to show you where you are, so that the weeks you have go to the right section. Leaving the first mock until the end tells you something you can no longer act on.
After that, one full mock every week or two is enough for most people. More often than that and there is not enough time between sittings to fix anything.
Sit it as you will on the day
Do the whole test in one sitting, in the official order, on the clock, with no pauses and no phone. The real test is about 90 minutes of continuous attention, and Speaking comes at the end of it. Practising sections separately never shows you how that feels.
Use the equipment you will use on the day: the same headset, a keyboard for typing, a quiet room. If something goes wrong with your microphone, it is better to find out now.
The hour after matters most
Go through every question you got wrong, and every one you got right by guessing. For each, write one line on why: you did not know a word, you misread the question, you ran out of time, you changed a correct answer. The reasons repeat, and the repeats are your study plan.
For Writing and Speaking, compare what you produced with a corrected version. Pick the two or three changes that would have helped most and look for the same problems in your next piece.
Look for the pattern, not the score
A single score moves by half a band for reasons that have nothing to do with your English: the topic of a passage, a noisy room, one unlucky question. Do not read much into one result.
What matters is the trend over three or four sittings, and which task types keep costing you points. If the same task is weakest twice in a row, that is where the next week should go.
Between mocks
Work on the weakest task type, in short timed sets, until it is no longer the weakest. Then sit another full mock to check that the improvement holds when you are tired.
Repeating a mock you have already sat tells you little, because you remember the questions. Use a paper you have not seen.
This is an independent summary written for test takers. ETS publishes the official specification of the test on its own website.
